A Teacher and Mentor

Throughout my time at Berkeley I took roughly four courses offered by Mrs. Beitler not only because of the material covered in the courses but because SHE was the one teaching them. There are few teachers or professors I have come across throughout 14 years at Berkeley Preparatory School and 4 years at The University of Michigan that have made learning so easy, natural, and fun. One course that has stuck with me in particular since I took it nearly 6 years ago was a course Mrs. Beitler conceived and constructed herself on Global Human Rights. This course ended up being very focused on past and present women’s rights fights throughout the world as most of the class was female. This was my first introduction into women’s rights – a topic I focused on throughout the rest of my years as a high school and college student. I learned so much in this course and couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to this particular topic.

Mrs. Beitler has the incredible ability to make learning material meaningful for every unique student.

Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Beitler chaperoned my half-summer program in Florence, Italy. During this time we actually shared an apartment! It was this time we shared that we became close as people, as mentor and mentee. Mrs. Beitler is of the most caring, thoughtful, intelligent, and kind people I have ever met. Any student who is lucky enough to have had her as a teacher can attest to her unrelenting care and consideration for her students and dedication to helping them learn in any way that is best for them. She has the ability to teach students with any sort of learning style needs and is endlessly patient. She is an amazing teacher and an equally incredible person who remains dear to me even years after I last learned from her.
